Freight leaders convene roundtable on energy productivity

The Australian Alliance for Energy Productivity (A2EP), in partnership with MOV3MENT, convened a roundtable of freight leaders in Melbourne in March 2020 with the purpose of sharing information and canvassing ideas about improving energy productivity in freight transport.


The roundtable was attended by about thirty leaders from industry, government and academia. It considered a roadmap for energy productivity improvement in freight transport drafted by A2EP. The roadmap, revised in light of suggestions made at the roundtable and otherwise, will serve as the foundation for further engagement and advocacy. There was clear consensus at the roundtable regarding the need for collaboration between industry and government to develop and disseminate trusted information about opportunities, best practice and business cases. And about the need to identify resources for that work.

We featured three international guest presenters: Sophie Punte, Rick Mihelic and Andy Eastlake. You’ll find below a biographical note for each of them along with notes about A2EP and MOV3MENT.

International speakers

Andy Eastlake – Managing Director, Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership (UK)

Andy Eastlake was appointed as the LowCVP's Managing Director in April 2012, after serving both on the board and as chair of the Members Council for many years. As MD Andy has been integrally involved in the design and implementation of the latest accreditation schemes for both buses and heavy goods vehicles, supporting DfT and OLEV in stimulating the uptake of low carbon technologies. He has a strong background in vehicle engineering with and for global OEMs, specialising in powertrain developments, fuel economy and emissions – including as Group Head of Commercial and Projects at Millbrook Proving Ground where he led the work on powertrain test and development programmes and alternative fuels. He is a Fellow of the Institution of the Mechanical Engineers and was formerly a Board member of CENEX the Centre of Excellence for Low Carbon & Fuel Cell Technologies.


Sophie Punte – Executive Director, Smart Freight Centre (EU)

Sophie Punte is Executive Director of Smart Freight Centre (SFC), a mission-driven organisation in the global logistics sector that strives for increased efficiency and zero-emissions. She established the industry-backed Global Logistics Emissions Council (GLEC) to develop standardised guidelines for emissions calculation, reporting and reduction. Previously, as Executive Director of Clean Air Asia, Sophie was a pioneer in introducing green freight to Asia. She has also worked on environmental management and corporate sustainability at the United Nations, KPMG and an engineering firm. She sits on various boards and councils, including the WEF Global Future Council on Mobility.


Rick Mihelic – Director Future Technologies Studies, North American Council for Freight Efficiency

Rick has 34 years’ experience in product development engineering and project management, including 20 years in commercial vehicle development for Peterbilt aerodynamic vehicles and 12 years in DOD, NASA and DOE development programs. He is an active participant in Truck and Engine Manufacturers (EMA) review and feedback on EPA/NHTSA Green House Gas rules regarding aerodynamics and physical testing; aerodynamics lead for the Peterbilt/Cummins DOE SuperTruck program; managing support for SAE Task Forces on fuel consumption test protocols and EPA’s SmartWay program. Rick received the prestigious SAE L. Ray Buckendale Award in 2016. He is the author of Fuel and Freight Efficiency – Past, Present and Future Perspectives amongst papers on fuel economy, aerodynamics, platooning, regional haul, and battery electric trucks.
